Beranová, Monika ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Růžička, Daniel (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on analyzing the media image of two significant political and cultural figures, Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth II. Both figures passed away shortly after each other in 2023. The text describes in detail the lives and political careers of both figures, their impact on the world, and the current perception of their characters. Mikhail Gorbachev is often referred to as the greatest politician of the 20th century. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 and was also its sole President from 1990 to 1991. He advocated for economic and political changes that led to the democratization of the Soviet Union. In 1990, he even received the Nobel Peace Prize. The figure of Mikhail Gorbachev is still perceived very differently by Russians, the global public, politicians, and the academic community. Gorbachev himself was never fully identified as the architect of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Queen Elizabeth II reigned as the Queen of fifteen independent states known as the Commonwealth realm from 1952 to 2022. Main events of the period of dissolution of the Soviet Union in Czech media
Mališová, Klára ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
This thesis deals with how three chosen Czech daily newspapers - Rudé právo, Mladá fronta (later Mladá fronta DNES) and Lidové noviny - wrote about significant events that took place in the union republics during the last three years of the Soviet Union's existence (1989-1991). It specifically focuses on those events through which the republics were trying to regain freedom and independence for themselves - either through protests, or in a political matter. The thesis also addresses events that were somehow groundbreaking or during which ordinary people, who went to the streets to express their dissaproval of current political situation or to defend legally elected bodies, lost their lives. The thesis uses qualitative analysis to find out if there was a difference in how these three selected Czech newspapers wrote about such events in the context of changes that occured in the Czech political and media system, and if each own coverage somehow evolved.

The bachelor thesis "The role of Mikhail Gorbachev in the process of reunification of Germany" aims to analyze the position of the last Soviet leader in the negotiations towards eliminating the division of Germany into two German states - Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and German Democratic Republic (GDR). The work analyzes the changes in the Soviet-German relations after the election of Gorbachev as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. This thesis focuses on the foreign policy of the Soviet leader inspired by the concept of the "New Thinking" and its influence on the fate of divided Germany. The greatest attention is paid to the attitudes of the last Soviet statesman in several aspects: the possibility of a German reunification, NATO-membership of the reunited state and the conditions of withdrawal of the Soviet troops from the GDR territory. The last part of the thesis is a reflection of the negotiations on the reunification of Germany in the Czechoslovak press (Lidové noviny).
